Galax VA – Rooftop of Virginia — a local community action nonprofit serving Carroll County, Grayson County, and Galax — is currently preparing for its free tax assistance program to kick off in January. The income-based program, known as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), serves hundreds of families and individuals in the area to ensure they can file their taxes for free and receive tax credits they are eligible for. Terri Gillespie, CEO of Rooftop, said volunteers are sorely needed for the program locally, which provides free tax services for households with incomes lower than $65,000.
